One more reason to go to Candler Park Market

Jun 15 2010

This morning Alex, my three year old, and I went for yet another popsicle at the Candler Park Market. He got a sherbet Push-Up like he always does, I got a boatload of napkins, and we headed outside to sit at the little cafe tables in front of the market.

Much to our delight, we were treated to a bird show that included Mama Sparrow, Papa Sparrow, and at least three adorable baby sparrows that appeared to be nothing but giant mouths. They had built a makeshift nest under the eaves of the roof, and little bits of tell-tale nest material were dangling down from their perch.

In the fifteen minutes we were there, Mama and Papa Bird must have made at least ten trips to and from the babies, delivering some kind of dilectable treat, although we couldn't tell what it was. They also gave me the hairy eyeball when I tried to get close enough to take a picture.

The point of the story? Well, there isn't one. But if you like birds, and who doesn't, treat yourself to a nice snack or beverage at the Candler Park Market, and keep an eye out for our new bird neighbors.

Candler Park Raccoon

Jun 14 2010

From Dina Gunderson:

While walking to the Marta station around 8:45 this morning, I saw a raccoon running straight down the middle of Oakdale.   It veered off to the side of the road and picked up what looked like roadkill, then ran back across the street with the whatever-it-was dangling from its mouth and ran up to and through the porch of a yellow house.

My husband commented that unusual behavior could be a sign of a rabid animal.  I read later today that mother raccoons are known to sometimes forage in the daytime if their young need food, so maybe it’s not necessarily a rabid raccoon.  But anyway, people in the area might want to be careful.

Jun 14 2010

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
2011 Places in Peril

THE GEORGIA TRUST NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Do you know of a special irreplaceable historic building or site that is highly threatened by demolition, neglect, inappropriate development or other threats? If so, this is your opportunity to help save it. The Georgia Trust's Places in Peril program seeks to identify and preserve historic sites threatened by demolition, neglect, lack of maintenance, inappropriate development or other threats.

Nominate a Place in Peril now >>

Preservation Field Services for Places in Peril!
Through a Partners in the Field grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and generous support from statewide donors and charitable organizations, each Place in Peril will receive direct assistance as part of The Georgia Trust's Partners in the Field program. Jordan Poole, our field services representative, will visit each designee and work with the local property owners and community leaders to help form a preservation strategy for each 2011 Places in Peril site.

THINK BROADLY
When identifying potential Places in Peril, please keep in mind that there are many ways to be a strong candidate for this program. Yes, we're interested in those significant sites that are in immediate danger.  However, we're also interested in sites that represent significant preservation issues and trends in the state that need attention. Examples could include a building type that's particularly endangered or a potential heritage tourism district.

And remember our criteria!
We're looking for historic properties that are historically significant; significantly threatened; have demonstrated community commitment; a reasonable potential for a positive outcome; or highlights statewide threats to historic properties; and represent diversity in terms of geographical distribution, variety of property/building types, and issues and constituencies served.

Nominations forms available at
www.georgiatrust.org or contact Jordan Poole at 404-885-7809 or jpoole@georgiatrust.org.

POSTMARK DEADLINE: MONDAY, JUNE 28

Through a Partners in the Field grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and generous support from statewide donors and charitable organizations, The Georgia Trust is able to provide on-site preservation assistance to its 2011 list of 10 Places in Peril.

Final Days for Baker Photo Exhibit at Carter Library

Jun 14 2010

From a Carter Library & Museum Press Release

Amazing Large Format Photos From Around the World

There are less than three weeks left to see one of the most amazing photography exhibits you'll ever see. Former Tennessee Senator Howard Baker has traveled the world as a Senator, Chief of Staff to President Reagan and as Ambassador to Japan and everywhere he went, he took his camera. Baker started taking photographs as a twelve year old Boy Scout and the images he captures are truly incredible, whether it is an eagle in flight or the faces of children in Appalachia.

If you enjoy photography, you won't want to miss seeing this wonderful exhibit. The last day is June 27th.

You can see images from the exhibit on the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library Facebook page

See information about all our upcoming events at www.jimmycarterlibrary.gov and become a fan of the Carter Library on Twitter. For more information, contact Tony Clark at (404) 865-7109.
