Editor's notes about why this meeting matters: Atlanta is divided into 12 Council Districts representing between 33,000-37,000 residents each. When census results are posted, our City Council adjusts the District boundaries to try and even up the population (+/- 5%) for each representative.
Candler Park is in District 6 and we have Alex Wan as our representative. Lake Claire is in City Council District 5 and has Natalyn Archibong. Inman Park is in District 2 and has Kwanza Hall. Though we all go to the same elementary school, our City Council reps vary greatly.
Our City Council is in the midst of redrawing those boundaries. Depending on which map they finally decide on, we will likely end up changing reps to either Kwanzaa Hall or Natalyn Archibong. Get more details at http://citycouncil.atlantaga.gov/redistricting/redistricting.pdf.
Recently, in response to concerns from Morningside and Va-Hi about City Council and Atlanta School Board representative district alignment, the map was adjusted to move Grady High School back into District 6 in the new map.
Council is now hearing from many Midtown residents about the same issue and the possibility of changes to the map again.
Per Alex Wan, it appears very likely that the Committee on Council will be finalizing the map on Tuesday, January 17, at 11:15 am. At this meeting there will be a public hearing where citizens will have the opportunity to share your opinions before the map is approved. If you want your voice to be heard on which Council district Grady High School will be placed, please email Council members or attend the public hearing.
