Right now the conditions at Candler Park Golf Course are the best I've experienced in 20 years of playing there. If you have never experienced this beautiful and picturesque walk on par with the visuals of Augusta National, now is the time. It's the most inexpensive full golf experience in the Atlanta Metro area. There's no membership, age or ability requirements. And absolutely no "club" attitude.
Also, if you have not heard, the Atlanta Parks Commission is threatening to close it - more on that later....
Candler Park Movie Nights are FREE and take place in Candler Park at dusk. Movie night is produced by Friends of Candler Park and funded by CPNO.
Golf Course status
I am posting Lauren's explanation on the status of the golf course and the park below.
Please go by the club house and speak with Michael or email him at mc2@mindspring.com if you want a voice in the decision of the golf course.
Thank you!
The current potential site for the dog park is near the ravine up by McLendon Avenue. It's a little hard to describe, but it's basically the space between the ravine and the sidewalk that goes down through the park.
The reason some of this has become confusing is because there are several things happening with the city park all at once. First, the open meeting occurred at Manuel's where CPNO board members heard from residents about some of their top priorities. A dog park was near the top of the list, and several volunteers agreed to take on the project.
More recently, Park Pride selected Candler Park to participate in a long-term visioning process about how we want the park to look in the future. And yes, this does include the golf course. It IS possible that after significant input from residents that the location of the dog park could be moved to a space where the golf course is now, but the ONLY way that would happen is if the vast majority of input CPNO and Park Pride received from residents demanded this. There has been some conversation about how well the golf course is doing and the fact that it is losing money for the City of Atlanta. However, if through this Park Pride visioning process, Candler Park residents indicate that we want to keep the golf course, that viewpoint will be strongly taken into consideration. Everything is potentially on the table when talking about the future of the park, so there are many possibilities out there and the only way they will move forward is with Candler Park residents at the table voicing what we want to see.
Much of this is still in the beginning planning phases, so please expect continued communication from CPNO about this. The best way for residents to stay in touch about this is to check the Candler Park website at www.candlerpark.org and to read the Messenger. Much of this kind of information can be gleaned from the meeting notes printed in the Messenger each month. We know it's hard for people to make meetings, so the newsletter and the website are our best communication tools. Maybe there's also a way to connect some of those communications to this listserv as well, since we know it's so widely used.
Thanks!!
Lauren
